Established in 1920 in Peshawar, British India from the 1920s to 1947. After
partition of India in 1947 the first Moti Mahal Daryaganj, established in Old
Delhi. Moti Mahal introduced traditional Punjabi and Pathani recipes to a
broader audience. The restaurant’s innovative approach to cooking,
especially its use of the tandoor (clay oven), revolutionized Indian culinary
practices. Notably, the Butter Chicken was reportedly created by accident
when leftover tandoori chicken was simmered in a tomato-butter gravy,
